In June World Food Safety day was celebrated around the world. In Canada the Minister of Health issued a statement saying “Today I invite all Canadians to join me in recognizing World Food Safety Day 2023 because safe food is essential to our health and wellbeing”. The theme of this year’s food safety campaign is ‘Food standards saves lives’ which highlights the importance of clean and safe food for all.
Canada is well recognised for being one of the leaders in the field when it comes to food safety. Food safety in Canada not only abides by international standards from Codes Alimentarius but also has rigorous internal procedures at both a federal and provincial level.
Among those at the forefront of campaigning for safe food and diligent food standards is the World Health organisation (WHO). In their recognition of world food safety day the WHO published some thought-provoking statistics regarding food safety and the need to maintain strict standards. The ‘Food standards saves lives’ theme is based on the fact that 1 600 000 people get sick from unsafe food every day. Of those people, 340 vulnerable children under 5 die each day from food borne illness. It has also been shown that over 200 diseases are caused from unsafe food.
These are rather sobering statistics and highlight the need for ongoing and diligent food safety practices so that we can keep the population safe from largely preventable diseases.
At Thermonalysis our goal is to not only be part of the efforts towards food safety but to be at the forefront of simplifying the process. When you look at the predicted food trends in the industry digitization of food management systems is one of the biggest predicted emerging trends.
Not only should we be even more rigorous in our food safety standards but we also need to find ways to simplify and automate some of these processes. Because the reality of the situation is that things get busy in the kitchen and it is easy to skip some of these steps in a real world setting.
So in the spirit of World Food safety and in keeping people safe from food borne diseases as well as simplifying the processes for the people who work behind the scenes we are looking forward to being able to bring our technology to market.
