How to know you're buying a good food thermometer






There are certain features of a food thermometer that should be considered when choosing which thermometer to use in your food establishment. We have listed some of the features that restaurant owners have told us are important to them. These include:


1. Accuracy – this is the most important feature of your food thermometer and is an essential feature of any food thermometer

2. Easy to read - the screen of your thermometer should be clear and easy to ready whether you are in an area that has poor light or not and whether you are reading the thermometer from close up or not

3. Quick read out time – the temperature should register quickly on the thermometer so as not to distract from your other tasks or waste your valuable kitchen time

4. Size – the thermometer should not be big and bulky and should be easy to handle

5. Instructions – instruction should be clear and easy to use

6. Ease of use – the ideal food thermometer should be quick and easy to use and should be comfortable to hold in either hand

7. Range – the thermometer should have a large range of temperatures that it is able to read a large range of temperatures

8. Easy to calibrate – your food thermometer should come with clear instructions of how to calibrate the unit and this should ideally be a quick and easy process

9. Low risk of contamination – infrared thermometers are advantageous because they don’t come into contact with food and therefore have minimal risk for cross-contaminating foods

10. Comparable to gold standards – whichever thermometer you choose to use, the accuracy of the thermometer should be as close to the gold standard thermometer as possible

11. Price – your food thermometer should be well priced

12. Intended use – there are a variety of different food thermometers for different uses in the kitchen so make sure that your thermometer is approved for the function that you want it for

13. Special features – certain thermometers have added special features that ca add to their appeal so make sure that you are getting what you want from your device
